Record Wheat Intake
Syria's General Establishment for Grain said the volume of wheat it has received from this season's harvest across the provinces has passed 2.5 million tons to date, describing the total as a marker of the body's recovery.
The figure was announced on 29 July 2026 by the establishment's director general, Hassan al-Othman, who said the quantities received and stored point to progress toward the country's strategic aim of self-sufficiency and food security.
Gains Since Mid-July
The latest total marks a rise from the 2.2 million tons the establishment reported on 15 July 2026, part of what it called a continuing effort to build up the country's strategic grain reserve.
The establishment framed the difference from previous years as evidence that plans to expand cultivated land and rebuild the grain body were taking hold, saying the season reflected a real recovery in its operations.
Reception Network
A network of 84 reception centers played a central role in marketing the crop, according to the establishment, easing the process for farmers delivering their harvest during the procurement season.
The centers were described as reducing the burden on growers and helping bring the marketed quantities into the state system more smoothly.
Expanded Storage
The establishment said it had rehabilitated and equipped the available storage it could draw on — silos, smaller elevators, open yards and warehouses — to absorb the incoming crop.
That work, it said, proved efficient in handling the marketed quantities and raised the overall storage capacity available for this year's harvest.
Toward Food Security
The establishment tied the season's intake to a broader goal of securing domestic food supplies and keeping flour available to bakeries across the country.
It said the effort to receive wheat from farmers in the various provinces was continuing alongside the upgrading of storage infrastructure at approved centers.
