1,050 Tons Bound for Deir ez-Zor
The Syrian Ministry of Economy and Industry said on 29 May 2026 that it has dispatched 1,050 tons of flour to Deir ez-Zor to keep bakeries running in the eastern governorate after recent flooding along the Euphrates River. The shipments are being drawn from flour reserves held in the governorates of Homs and Hama and routed to Deir ez-Zor as part of an active relief operation.
Emergency Food Support
The flour delivery follows the rise in the Euphrates earlier in the week, which inundated low-lying areas of Deir ez-Zor and disrupted local food supply. The ministry described the dispatch as part of immediate and emergency support measures aimed at preserving bread availability for residents of the affected governorate during the critical phase of the response.
Multi-Ministry Coordination
Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry for Internal Trade and Consumer Protection Maher Khalil al-Hassan oversaw the dispatch of the flour, in coordination with Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh. The two ministries have been working together on the relief response to the flooding since the river first overflowed earlier in the week.
2,400 Families Affected
Officials said roughly 2,400 families have been affected by the high water along the Euphrates in Deir ez-Zor. Water levels along the river have since returned to closer to normal, the ministry said, easing operating conditions on the ground and allowing relief supplies, including the flour from Homs and Hama, to move into the governorate.
Bread Supply Focus
By rerouting flour stocks from Homs and Hama, the Economy Ministry is treating continued operation of bakeries in Deir ez-Zor as the immediate priority of its part of the emergency response. Bread is the main staple of the local diet, and the dispatch is intended to keep ovens turning while local food supply chains recover.
