Iraq Sends First Crude Shipment to Syria via Rabia-Yaarubiyah Border

Iraq dispatched its first 70 tankers of crude oil to Syria through the Rabia-Yaarubiyah land crossing on 1 May 2026, opening a new export route weeks after the border post was officially reopened.

First 70 Tankers Roll Across

Iraq launched the export of crude oil to Syria through the Rabia-Yaarubiyah land border crossing on Friday, 1 May 2026, sending an initial batch of 70 tankers loaded with crude into Syrian territory. The Iraqi Border Crossings Authority confirmed the start of operations and said additional convoys would follow under coordinated security and regulatory procedures.

The shipment marks the first time the Rabia-Yaarubiyah corridor has been used for crude exports, opening a new overland route between the two neighbors.

A New Strategic Corridor

Authority chief Omar al-Wa'ili described the move as the launch of the crossing as a "strategic corridor" for crude oil exports, saying it would relieve pressure on Iraq's other outlets and diversify marketing channels for its oil. He said authorities are working to expand the crossing's capacity, infrastructure, and logistics services to match expected volumes in the coming phase.

Customs Authority director general Thamer Qassem Daoud framed the operation as a sign of the country's evolving logistics environment and a step that strengthens border posts as economic engines feeding government revenues and regional trade.

Reopened Crossing, Resumed Trade

The crossing was officially reopened on 20 April 2026 after Syrian and Iraqi authorities completed rehabilitation and maintenance works on both sides. The launch of crude shipments comes weeks later, signaling that physical readiness has now been matched by commercial flows.

Iraqi officials said overland export through border posts has become an important option to diversify routes and reduce risks tied to traditional channels.

Building on Earlier Flows

Iraqi crude had already begun moving to Syria earlier in the year through a different point, the Tanf-Walid crossing, with the first batches arriving in early April 2026 and heading to the Banias refinery on the Syrian coast. The Rabia-Yaarubiyah opening adds a second active overland link for oil supply.

The number of tankers passing through the new crossing is set to increase progressively, with each rise tied to the regulatory and security clearances overseen by the relevant Iraqi authorities.
