Homs Refinery Returns Distillation Unit 10 to Service

The General Company of Homs Refinery returned distillation unit 10 to service on 19 October 2026 after its first full overhaul in more than ten years, aiming to strengthen local supplies of mazut, naphtha and kerosene.

Unit Back Online in Homs

The General Company of Homs Refinery returned atmospheric distillation unit 10 to service on 19 October 2026 after a comprehensive overhaul, the first full maintenance of the unit in more than ten years.

The restart brings a long-idle processing line back to a refinery that is central to supplying fuel across the country, and officials said the unit is now operating in a stable and safe condition.

Capacity and Current Load

The unit has a design capacity of 1 million tons of crude oil per year. It is running at about 75 percent of that level on a temporary basis, a figure calculated on 8,000 operating hours per year, with output set to rise gradually given the age of the equipment.

Crude supply to the refinery remains insufficient, and the company said it is working to secure the quantities and specifications needed to lift throughput.

Impact on Fuel Supply

The line produces mazut, naphtha and kerosene, and its return is intended to reinforce domestic supplies of these products at a time of tight availability.

The company expects the added output to raise the volumes of mazut and fuel oil that can be allocated to power plants, easing one constraint on electricity generation.

Scope of the Overhaul

Engineers replaced furnace tubes, manufactured about 20 new distillation tower trays, and serviced heat exchangers, condensers, pumps and electric motors. The long gap since the previous overhaul was attributed to a shortage of spare parts.

Output is monitored continuously through central control systems that track pressure, temperature and product quality, with samples tested in a central laboratory before transfer to storage.

Phased Return of Capacity

The restart is part of a staged effort to bring idle units back online. A separate line known locally as the "Czech unit" was returned to service in July 2026 after a similar overhaul.

Maintenance on distillation unit 100 is nearing completion, and gasoline production units are expected back within days, a step the company says would increase gasoline availability.
