Equipment Reaches Nassib
The first batch of engineering equipment arrived at the Nassib border crossing on 4 September 2026 to begin the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Damascus–Nassib international highway. The shipment marks the opening phase of a staged program to overhaul one of the country's principal overland trade routes.
Officials involved in the project said further specialized machinery would arrive in successive batches as the works progress through multiple stages.
A Kuwaiti-Syrian Contract
The rehabilitation is being carried out after a Kuwaiti contracting group won the maintenance contract, working in cooperation with a Syrian contracting company. The arrangement brings a foreign contractor onto a strategic Syrian infrastructure project at a time when the country is seeking to rebuild its cross-border links.
Representatives of the Kuwaiti company said the current equipment is dedicated primarily to milling and repaving work, and described the first delivery as the start of a longer series of shipments matched to the project's phases.
Scope of the Works
The works will involve removing worn asphalt layers, milling the roadbed and laying new asphalt to recognized international standards. Additional specialized equipment is expected to follow to complete the maintenance and rehabilitation.
Company representatives said they intend to bring more machinery to Syria for their projects, pointing to the possibility of undertaking further infrastructure work in the country in the future.
A Trade and Transit Artery
The stretch under repair forms part of the international road running between the Nassib crossing in the south and the Bab al-Hawa crossing in the north. The corridor is described as a vital artery for transit and for international and regional trade moving across Syrian territory.
Restoring the route to international standards is intended to support the flow of goods and commercial traffic through the country, reconnecting Syria's southern gateway toward Jordan with its northern crossing toward Türkiye.
