Damascus Fair Draws 60 Countries as European Firms Return to Syria

The 63rd Damascus International Fair opened with 60 countries and about 1,000 companies taking part, up from 46 countries a year earlier, as European and German firms returned to a market courting reconstruction and energy investment.

Sixty Nations Converge on Damascus

The 63rd Damascus International Fair opened for a run from 26 August to 4 September 2026, drawing participants from 60 countries and roughly 1,000 companies to the Syrian capital. Staged under the theme "Syria Shines Again," the exhibition has grown into one of the region's larger annual trade gatherings.

A Wider Field Than Last Year

The turnout marks a clear expansion over the previous edition. The 62nd fair, held in 2025, brought together 46 countries and about 800 local and foreign companies, and drew 2.26 million visitors over its run.

Business generated at that edition was substantial. Deals and preliminary agreements signed on its sidelines were valued at more than 935 billion in old Syrian pounds (SYP), a figure organizers cite as evidence of the event's commercial weight.

European Firms Return

Among the most notable shifts this year is the return of European exhibitors, including German companies, after a stretch of limited engagement. Their presence signals renewed international interest in Syria's markets as the country seeks foreign capital for its recovery.

From Bazaar to Investment Platform

Officials and economists describe the fair as having evolved from a consumer-goods showcase into a platform for courting investment. Priority sectors on display include reconstruction, energy, infrastructure and manufacturing.

Specific opportunities being promoted range from road and bridge rehabilitation, water and sanitation networks, telecommunications and housing to renewable energy projects in solar and wind, alongside food and engineering industries.

What the Numbers Signal

The scale of participation offers a measurable read on confidence in the Syrian economy. A jump from 46 to 60 participating states, paired with the reappearance of Western firms, points to a gradual reopening of commercial channels that had narrowed sharply in prior years.

Whether the interest on display translates into binding contracts will become clearer once the fair concludes on 4 September 2026 and any agreements are tallied.
