Damascus – August 2, 2026
The Central Bank of Syria (CBS) has announced the start of the withdrawal of old Syrian currency from circulation as of July 31, 2026, following the end of the official exchange period on July 30. The bank said the withdrawal process will continue for five years under a specified mechanism.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Central Bank said that the old Syrian currency has lost its status as legal tender and has been withdrawn from circulation in all denominations, meaning it can no longer legally be used in financial transactions, to settle obligations, or to make payments.
According to the bank, preliminary estimates show that more than 95% of the total cash supply of the old currency was exchanged during the previous replacement period. The CBS said it has introduced additional measures to facilitate the withdrawal of the remaining notes.
One Additional Week to Exchange Old Currency
The Central Bank has granted holders of old Syrian banknotes one final week to surrender them and receive their equivalent value in the new Syrian currency.
The additional period will run from Sunday, August 2, through Thursday, August 6, 2026.
During this period, exchanges will be available through all public and private banks, as well as branches of the Syrian Postal Corporation across all Syrian governorates, with no commissions, fees, taxes, or other charges.
The decision gives holders of the old banknotes a final opportunity to exchange them through the country’s banking and postal networks before a different mechanism comes into effect.
Withdrawal to Continue for Five Years Through the Central Bank in Damascus
After the one-week extension expires, the withdrawal of the old currency will continue for five years, but exclusively through the Central Bank of Syria in Damascus.
Individuals wishing to surrender old banknotes will be required to submit an electronic application through a dedicated website, provide the requested information, and schedule an appointment to complete the withdrawal process.
The Central Bank said it will publish further details on how to submit applications, use the dedicated online platform, and book appointments through its official website and communication channels.
Central Bank Pledges to Maintain Stability of Cash Circulation
The Central Bank said it will continue to assess the country’s cash circulation needs and take the necessary measures to ensure an adequate supply of banknotes in the market.
It added that the measures are intended to strengthen the stability of the national currency, maintain the efficiency of cash circulation, and meet the requirements of the Syrian economy in the coming period.
