Livestock Arrive at Tartus
Syria's Tartus port received three transit vessels carrying about 29,000 head of livestock on Saturday, 8 August 2026, according to a statement issued that day by the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs. The shipments were cleared for onward overland transport to Jordan and Iraq.
The arrivals were handled through the Mediterranean port, which the authority described as a growing hub for goods moving between coastal terminals and neighboring markets. The details were published the same day through the authority's official channel.
Origins and Destinations
Two of the vessels arrived from Brazil carrying roughly 15,000 calves, while a third ship sailed from Spain with more than 14,000 sheep. All of the animals were destined for markets in Jordan and Iraq rather than for the Syrian market, moving through the country as transit cargo.
The consignment placed Syria along a supply route linking South American and European exporters to buyers across the region, with the coast serving as the entry point for goods that continue on by land.
Inspection and Handling
Specialized crews began unloading the animals after completing approved health and veterinary inspections. Measures were taken to safeguard the livestock during offloading and transport and to keep operations flowing smoothly inside the port.
Port management said it continued to provide logistical support and to streamline procedures for transit cargo, steps intended to speed unloading and onward movement toward regional destinations.
A Reviving Transit Role
The shipment forms part of what officials called expanding transit activity at Tartus. The traffic was framed as reinforcing the port's position as a crossing point for trade between Mediterranean harbors and regional states.
For Syria, handling international transit shipments supports its effort to serve as a link in regional transport and commercial exchange, generating cross-border movement through its coastal infrastructure and drawing consignments that might otherwise pass through competing routes.
