Rising Vessel Traffic
Tartus Port on Syria's Mediterranean coast has received 551 vessels since the beginning of 2026, according to figures released on 4 August 2026. The arrivals included 472 general cargo ships, 33 container vessels and 46 maintenance craft.
The port authority described the numbers as evidence of steadily growing operational activity through the first seven months of the year.
Cargo Volumes
Total general cargo handled at the port reached roughly 5 million tons, split between 3.9 million tons of imports and 1.1 million tons of exports. The heavy tilt toward incoming goods is consistent with the country's reliance on imports for fuel, food and industrial supplies.
Imports moving through the quays feed directly into domestic supply chains that shape prices in local markets.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The authority said it is modernizing the port's infrastructure, replacing and upgrading cranes and operational equipment to speed up cargo handling and improve quay efficiency. The stated aim is to expand capacity and shorten turnaround times for ships.
Logistics Ambitions
Officials framed the investment as part of an effort to strengthen the port's role as a logistics hub for maritime trade and to support wider economic activity. Higher throughput at Tartus is closely tied to the flow of imported goods on which the economy depends.
