Tabiya Plant Enters Testing
The Tabiya gas plant in Deir Ezzor province, in eastern Syria, has entered its operational testing phase, a step toward restoring domestic gas output after an extended period of stoppage. Technical crews lit the plant's flare once rehabilitation work was completed, opening a trial run of the facility's core systems.
The station, previously known as Conoco, had sustained heavy damage that halted its role in the country's energy supply before the current repair effort returned it toward readiness.
Rehabilitation by Local Crews
The chief executive of the state oil company said the restoration was carried out by national technical teams, describing the outcome as the result of local expertise that rebuilt a station left in serious disrepair and brought it back to a workable state.
He tied the work to a broader drive to rehabilitate damaged energy infrastructure and put domestic resources back into use in support of the sector and the wider economy.
Gas Bound for Homs
The plant is being prepared to send gas to Homs once final tests conclude in the coming days. The transmission system underwent gas-compression checks to confirm that its circuits and equipment were ready to carry the flow.
Officials framed the restart as a way to feed the national energy system with additional volumes of domestically produced gas, easing pressure on a power sector strained by years of shortage.
Timeline of the Restart
Mechanical works at the site were completed and operational testing of the gas-transmission network began on 25 August 2026, following the lighting of the flare and the gas-compression procedures used to verify the plant's readiness.
The company said the trial phase would continue until safe operation is reached under approved technical standards, with the next stage centered on delivering gas to Homs.
Why It Matters
Domestic gas is a central input for Syria's electricity generation, and returning a damaged facility to service points to a gradual effort to lift local production rather than rely on outside supply. The plant's full contribution will depend on the outcome of the remaining tests.
