Syrian Bakeries Close Only First Eid Day, Operate Full Capacity Through Holiday

The Syrian Bakeries Establishment will shutter its facilities only on Wednesday 27 May 2026, the first day of Eid al-Adha, and operate at full capacity through the remaining holiday days to keep daily bread supplied nationwide.

One-Day Eid Closure

Public bakeries across Syria will shut their doors only on Wednesday 27 May 2026, the first day of Eid al-Adha, and resume work for the rest of the holiday week, the state-run Syrian Bakeries Establishment said. The single-day pause is meant to preserve daily bread supply for households across the country during one of the busiest consumption periods of the year.

Director General Mohammad Al-Sayadi said the institution's facilities would run at full production capacity throughout the remaining holiday days to meet demand and head off any shortages in the governorates.

Measures to Keep Production Continuous

Al-Sayadi said the establishment had put in place the organizational and supply measures needed to keep production uninterrupted during the festival, ensuring inputs and staffing remain available across its sites. The plan relies on the existing network of automated and reserve bakeries distributed across Syria's governorates.

The institution said the holiday arrangements fall within the standard organizational steps it takes during major occasions to ensure continuous output and meet daily demand for the staple.

Eid Date Set by Crescent Committee

The National Crescent Monitoring Committee announced on 17 May 2026, following a joint sighting with the Syrian Astronomical Society, that the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah had been observed and that Monday 18 May was the first day of the lunar month. Tuesday 26 May is therefore the Day of Arafah, and Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday 27 May 2026.

Public Sector Holiday Window

On 20 May 2026, the General Secretariat of the Syrian Presidency issued a notice suspending work at public bodies for Eid al-Adha from Tuesday 26 May through Saturday 30 May 2026 inclusive. The notice referenced Paragraph C of Article 43 of the Basic Law for State Employees, which governs exceptions for essential services during official holidays.

The bakery announcement details how that exception applies to bread production, narrowing closures to a single day so that distribution can continue across the remaining four days of the public-sector recess.
