Syria Says Wheat Stocks Sufficient, Pauses Imports This Season

Syria's grain authority says its wheat reserves are enough to cover basic ration needs and keep bread and flour stable, and that imports will pause for the current harvest season.

Reserves Called Sufficient

Syria's grain authority said on 28 June 2026 that the wheat stock currently available is enough to cover the country's basic ration needs in the coming period.

The director general of the Syrian Grain Foundation, Aws Othman, said the available quantities help meet citizens' needs and ensure the continuity of supplies.

Daily Replenishment

The authority said the stock is not static but is being reinforced continuously, with new quantities arriving each day.

It described this steady inflow as the basis for keeping reserves topped up rather than drawn down as they are used.

Bread and Flour Supply

The continuous arrivals, the authority said, feed directly into the stable availability of bread and flour in local markets.

Both are staple goods whose supply the foundation tied to the level of its wheat holdings.

Imports on Hold

Wheat imports are being halted temporarily during the current season, with any decision to resume them tied to the results of the harvest.

The pause links the country's import needs to how much domestic wheat the season ultimately delivers, rather than setting them in advance.

Food Security Goal

The authority said it is also working to strengthen the strategic reserve in a way that supports the national food security system.

It framed the wider effort as guaranteeing the continuity of supplies of two staples that sit at the center of household consumption.
