Syria Weighs Reference Pricing for Poultry as Chick Imports Halt

Syria's Agriculture Ministry is studying a reference pricing system for poultry to curb sudden swings in white-meat prices, while a national committee has halted imports of broilers and chicks to protect local farmers.

Reference Pricing for Poultry

Syria's Ministry of Agriculture is studying the adoption of a reference pricing mechanism for poultry products, a step aimed at regulating the white-meat market and curbing the sudden price swings seen in recent weeks.

The deputy minister of agriculture for livestock and rural development, Ayham Abdulqader, said the ministry is preparing a detailed study of poultry production costs at each stage of the value chain in order to set a fair reference price.

Balancing Producers and Consumers

The proposed price is intended to strike a balance between the interests of producers and consumers, limiting unjustified increases while improving the efficiency of supply and demand.

The ministry said it is coordinating with the Ministry of Economy and Industry and other relevant bodies to build an integrated regulatory framework for the poultry sector.

Halt on Chick Imports

The move follows a decision by the national import-export committee, taken in early July 2026, to halt imports of broilers, broiler chicks, and layer chicks until further notice, in order to protect local production and support poultry farmers.

Earlier, the customs and border authority had extended permission to import poultry-sector supplies through the end of April 2026, a measure meant to keep the market stable and production uninterrupted.

Securing Supply and Eggs

Officials said current efforts focus on ensuring the availability of poultry and table eggs in local markets and improving the flow of supplies to meet rising demand without shortages.

The aim, according to the ministry, is to keep products on shelves at stable prices as consumption grows.

A Governance System for the Sector

The ministry added that it is drawing up a comprehensive governance system for the poultry sector built on transparency, oversight, and coordination among the agencies involved.

It said the framework is designed to secure safe, high-quality production in line with food-safety standards while reducing exposure to external volatility.
