Damascus Meeting Sets Third Session
Senior officials from Syria and Jordan met in Damascus on 24 September 2026 to prepare for the third session of the two countries' Supreme Coordination Council, which is scheduled to convene in the Syrian capital in October 2026. Deputy ministers for energy, transport, economy and industry, communications, and agriculture took part, alongside representatives of investment, border-crossing, and aviation authorities.
The talks were cast as a follow-up to the council's second session, held in Amman on 12 April 2026, which established a joint working team to advance a slate of strategic economic projects. The foreign ministry said the gathering was convened to put the Amman outcomes into effect, with the joint team tasked to track progress across energy, trade, transport, water, and telecommunications files.
Trade Tripled to $330 Million
Officials reported that commercial exchange between the two countries has tripled to $330 million (USD). The two sides also activated a reciprocal trade-exchange mechanism agreed at the April meeting.
They further cited the signing of an updated air services agreement and the launch of a joint digital platform to manage water in the shared Yarmouk basin.
Gas Flows Through Arab Pipeline
Among the developments reviewed was the start of Jordanian gas deliveries through the Arab Gas Pipeline. Energy has become a central strand of the bilateral agenda, alongside tenders opened to repair a cross-border electricity interconnection line.
Other projects on the joint list include allowing Syrian investors to operate through the Jaber border crossing and reviving the historic Hejaz railway line.
Digital Links on the Agenda
The agenda also covered a trilateral digital-connectivity agreement and a data-corridor project known as "Darb al-Safa," linking the Syrian Telecommunications Company with Jordan's Aqaba Digital initiative.
The coordination meeting followed a 9 September 2026 visit to Damascus by Jordan's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, who met President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani to discuss preparations for the coming session.
