Customs Chiefs Meet
The head of Syria's General Authority for Borders and Customs, Qutaiba Badawi, met his Iraqi counterpart, Omar Al-Waeli, chief of Iraq's Border Crossings Authority, to discuss strengthening cooperation and developing operations at the two countries' shared land crossings. The talks, held on 27 September 2026, brought together deputies from both customs bodies.
Faster Transit for Trucks
Both sides examined proposals to simplify procedures and remove unnecessary restrictions on shipments passing through their territories. A central idea was the advance processing of documents and data before trucks reach the crossings, a step intended to speed up transactions and cut waiting times for freight.
Officials also discussed electronic information exchange and the integration of customs systems to ease the movement of cargo, alongside dedicated procedures for hazardous and perishable goods.
Free Zones and Passengers
The two authorities looked at developing free zones at the Al-Tanf and Al-Yarubiyah crossings to attract investment and expand economic activity along the border. They also reviewed improvements to passenger halls at the shared crossings.
Building on Earlier Talks
The meeting followed an earlier session on 20 September 2026 at the Al-Tanf crossing, which included tours of the facilities and assessments of planned expansions. Together the discussions point to a steady effort to turn the border into a smoother channel for trade between the two neighbors.
