Central Bank Extends Old Currency Withdrawal to Post Offices Nationwide

Syria's central bank said citizens can hand in old banknotes at accredited post offices in every governorate rather than traveling to Damascus, part of a five-year withdrawal process that began on 31 July 2026 after the exchange deadline closed.

Withdrawal Moves to Post Offices

Syria's central bank said on 9 August 2026 that it is continuing to withdraw old Syrian pound (SYP) banknotes through accredited outlets of the Syrian Post across every governorate, under the rules governing the process. The announcement was posted on the bank's Telegram channel.

The step keeps the withdrawal running at local counters rather than concentrating it in the capital, so residents can complete the procedure closer to home and under the same official rules that have governed the drive so far.

No Trip to Damascus

The bank stressed that the process does not require a direct visit to its headquarters in Damascus. Citizens can instead go to accredited Syrian Post outlets in their own governorates and follow the set mechanism.

Officials framed the arrangement as a way to ease the burden of travel on citizens and to spread the service more evenly across the country.

Timeline of the Exchange

On 26 July 2026 the bank announced that the deadline to swap old banknotes would close on 30 July 2026, citing an advanced rate of completion in the exchange drive. The withdrawal of the old notes began the following day, on 31 July 2026.

That withdrawal phase is set to run for five years, giving holders of remaining old notes an extended window to return them.

Expanding Service Capacity

The bank said it is coordinating with the Syrian Post to increase the number of withdrawal windows and raise their readiness. The stated aim is to speed up and simplify how quickly citizens can access the service.

What It Means for Holders

For people still holding old notes, the practical change is where they go: accredited post branches in the governorates now handle the withdrawal under the same official rules. The bank said adding counters is intended to shorten waiting and keep the service available across different provinces.
