Silo Back in Service
The Qalaat al-Mudiq grain silo and reception center in Hama governorate has returned to operation after 10 months of rehabilitation, the national grain institution announced. The facility had been out of service since 2015 after sustaining damage from shelling, as well as sabotage and looting.
The reopening restores a key wheat collection point in central Syria at the start of the 2026 marketing season.
Capacity and Targets
The center can currently receive 1,500 tons of wheat per day, with work under way to raise that figure to 1,800 tons. Nearby silos at Kafrbaham are expected to reach a daily intake of 2,500 tons within two weeks.
Officials said the rehabilitation was carried out using domestic expertise and labor.
Timed to the Harvest
The facility came back online as the 2026 wheat marketing season, which opened in early June, is under way. Authorities have reported higher wheat output this year than in previous seasons, increasing the need for functioning storage and reception capacity.
Additional capacity allows the state to collect and store more of the harvest at the point of delivery.
Food Security Stakes
Wheat sits at the center of Syria's food supply, underpinning the subsidized bread that households across the country rely on. Restoring storage and reception centers reduces post-harvest losses and strengthens the state's ability to manage strategic grain reserves.
The deputy minister of economy and industry for domestic trade, Maher Khalil al-Hassan, attended the inauguration, signaling the priority placed on rebuilding the grain network.
