New Cranes at Tartus
Two modern mobile harbor cranes arrived at the Mediterranean port of Tartus on 11 August 2026, each with a lifting capacity of 125 tons. The units, of the KONECRANES MHC ESP.7B type, were delivered for DP World, the company overseeing the port's modernization.
The equipment is intended to develop the port's operating infrastructure and strengthen its capabilities with modern machinery, in step with the movement of maritime trade through the terminal.
Faster Cargo Handling
The new cranes are meant to raise the efficiency of cargo operations, accelerate loading and unloading, and increase the port's overall operational capacity. Their added lifting power allows heavier and bulkier consignments to be moved across the quays.
The upgrade is aimed at helping the terminal keep pace with the requirements of seaborne commerce as traffic through the port grows.
Part of a Wider Plan
The head of investment and operations at Tartus port, Yousef Arnous, said a first crane of the same type had been received earlier and that the two additional units complete the current phase of the plan. The delivery brings the number of cranes of that type at the port to three.
He said each new crane can lift up to 125 tons, and that the work is proceeding under DP World's supervision, in continuous coordination with the Syrian General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs.
Staged Re-Equipping
The arrival of the two cranes follows the earlier delivery of a similar unit, reflecting a phased approach to re-equipping the terminal rather than a single upgrade. The border and customs authority retains oversight of operations at the port while the modernization is carried out.
The operator has presented the additions as a continuation of an ongoing plan to expand the port's capabilities and its capacity to handle cargo.
