Weekly Link to Deir ez-Zor
A weekly direct air service will connect the German city of Cologne with Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria beginning 1 September 2026. A German carrier will operate one flight per week on the route.
The service marks the first regular European air link in the operational history of Deir ez-Zor International Airport, an eastern hub that had gone years without scheduled foreign flights.
Eastern Region Reconnected
The launch restores an international gateway to a region long isolated from direct air travel. The head of the Civil Aviation Authority, Omar Al-Hasri, cast the move as a pledge to residents of the area.
"We promise our people in Deir ez-Zor that we will work to connect them with the world," he said.
Three-City Network
With the addition of Deir ez-Zor, the operator will serve three Syrian cities, joining existing services to Damascus and Aleppo. The expansion widens the country's scheduled links to Europe beyond the two largest urban centers.
The carrier's chief executive, Daniel Broda, said the new route answers "increasing demand for direct, reliable flights between Germany and Syria."
Return After 14 Years
The eastern route builds on the resumption of scheduled flights between Syria and Germany during the summer of 2026, the first such service in roughly 14 years.
The inaugural flight under the revived link arrived in Damascus from Düsseldorf on 29 July 2026, ahead of the eastern extension now set for September.
Bilateral Aviation Accord
The reopened connections rest on a bilateral air transport agreement between the two governments finalized on 16 July 2026. The accord cleared the way for German carriers to schedule regular services to Syrian airports, of which the Deir ez-Zor link is the latest step.
