First European Flight Lands
Deir ez-Zor International Airport received its first direct flight by a German carrier on 1 September 2026, the first scheduled service by a European airline in the airport's commercial operating history. The aircraft had departed that morning from Bonn-Cologne Airport in western Germany.
The Syrian consul general in Bonn was present for the departure. The flight opens a direct air link between the eastern city and Europe for the first time since regular commercial operations at the airport began.
Plan to Expand Routes
The head of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport said the service is part of a plan to develop air traffic at Deir ez-Zor and widen its network of destinations, within a broader effort to reactivate Syrian airports and give travelers direct options.
He said the authority is seeking to add three new regional destinations to and from the airport. Specialized technical teams from the countries involved are due to visit during September to review equipment, operational infrastructure, and safety and security procedures before further operating stages.
A Network by Demand
Officials described a policy of developing Syria's airport network according to each site's operational and economic role and actual travel demand, rather than confining international links to the main hubs. The stated aim is to improve access to the governorates and support commercial and investment activity.
Relief for the East
The airport's director said regular, direct international flights ease a burden previously carried by residents of the province, who had to travel through other airports and take connecting flights to reach international destinations. He added that the service supports the return of expatriates and refugees from the eastern region to the country.
The airport had received its first flights by a Kuwaiti carrier from Kuwait on 8 August 2026, an earlier step in restoring its international traffic.
