Plants Back to Work
Forty-two canning facilities in Daraa governorate have resumed production to coincide with the peak of the tomato harvest, according to the local Directorate of Industry. The restart channels the season's crop into processed goods for the domestic market.
Output Per Facility
Each operating plant can process between 120 and 150 tons of raw material daily during the tomato season, the directorate said. The combined capacity places Daraa among the country's more active food-processing hubs at harvest time.
Cheaper Fuel Oil
Producers have benefited from a reduction in the price of industrial fuel oil from $475 to $400 per ton, easing a key operating cost. Customs exemptions on imported machinery have further lowered the barrier to running the plants.
Voices From the Sector
The industry director, Khaled Al-Atma, said field visits were carried out to assess production conditions and the obstacles facing operators. A facility owner, Nabil Al-Reis, described the availability of raw material and improved supplies as central to the restart.
Why It Matters
Food processing turns local agricultural output into storable, marketable products, supporting farmers' incomes and reducing waste at peak harvest. A stronger canning season in Daraa adds to domestic supply and the governorate's industrial activity.
